How to Budget for a Vacation in Mexico

Monette Williams
If the warmth of the sun and the exotic beaches seem like a great vacation to you, then you will love traveling to Mexico. But vacations can be expensive and you need to know how to plan your vacations in such a way that you are saving and not spending excess funds. Below I'll describe how to budget for a vacation to Mexico so you can really relax.

The first thing to do is plan your vacation well in advance. This will allow you to avail yourself of best rate opportunities. If you're rushing to make plans at the last minute, you will no doubt have to pay extra for everything. Even travel agents will give you discounts on air fare if you book a flight well in advance - the sooner you book the lower the cost of plane travel.

The second thing that will help you budget for your Mexico vacation, is knowing your exchange rate. These days a US dollar is about 13 Pesos. Hotel accommodations can cost anywhere from $10 to $1000! You need to find lodging that is within your budget and then figure out how much you'll be paying a night in Pesos. While a $10 hotel might be a sub par a place for you to stay, you can probably find suitable hotel accommodations in the $30 to $50 dollar price range.

Another way to lower your vacation costs to Mexico, is to plan during the off season, as opposed to peak season. Even the best resorts offer amazing packages if you vacation in the off season. You get the same benefits and the lavish accommodations for a fraction of the cost! The off season in Mexico is generally around September to October when the tourist establishments need the business and will advertise cheaper deals. If you find the weather too hot during that time you can always visit Mexico in May - June, which marks the end of peak season.

When choosing a location in Mexico, make sure you go for a town that is not very remote. This will save you costs on transportation. Try to find a place where everything is so nearby, that you can travel by walking. Not only is this smarter in terms of saving money, it is also more interesting.

Don't just spend useless money on unhealthy food items. Try to fill up with fruits and vegetables as much as possible rather than going out to restaurants the entire time. If you are not staying at a resort you can even choose to make your own breakfast and sandwiches. You should also try the street stands for tacos and other local food.

Don't just throw your money at the souvenir shops since they may be selling you high priced items, which may not be worth much. If you find something that you are particularly interested in, but it seems too expensive, try to look for it at another shop.

If you have to spend money on transportation, take the bus instead of a taxi. Or rent a car. There is also the option of charter bus tickets that you can take any particular place or even for a day trip. Enjoy your fun in the sun.
