How to Bug Out in Your Vehicle During a Disaster

Lance Esondi
One strategy that some use for disaster or survival preparation is to use a bug out location. This is a secluded area that you can go to in case of a severe disaster to be safe, away from the masses, and have supplies ready for you in case you have to stay a few days or even a few weeks. While this is a good longer-term strategy, it's a bit of a project for most.

An alternative to having a bug out location is to have a bug out vehicle. This might not be quite as effective as a bug out location, but it's very practical for many reasons.

First, you can keep your supplies with you at home and pack them into the vehicle if you need to go. The advantage of this is that you can have everything you need at home or move it and take it with you in case of an emergency. This could be better than leaving your supplies in a secluded area.

You can't always get out. When masses of people evacuate an area, sometimes it takes hours or even days to get out. People run out of gas and get stuck on the highway. With a bug out vehicle, you have everything you need to go in any direction or to stay put. The location doesn't matter.

You are guaranteed basic shelter and supplies if you prepare properly. You might not make it to where you want to be, but a prepared vehicle does offer you the advantage of knowing exactly what you have and exactly the conditions that you are going to be dealing with.

Be sure you know where you might take your vehicle if you do need to leave the city. It's not a bad idea to have some land or other locations you can go to and stay for a few days in case of a disaster or severe weather related events. The more you plan, the easier your life will be if bad things do happen.
