Some books sell as low as one cent, however there is an automatic $3.99 shipping fee. Due to the cost of the shipping fee, older paperback books can be purchased cheaper elsewhere.
Yard Sale
Yard sales sell books very cheap. Some books are as cheap as a nickel. Purchasing books from yard sales avoids the cost of shipping. The book selection is unpredictable and limited, but it is a great way to add additional books at a low price.
Facebook
The Marketplace on Facebook list books for sale. A lot of the books sold are textbooks sold by students. The books are priced at a decent price, but books purchased on Facebook involve you driving to meet with the seller. Facebook should be used for hardcover book purchases. Novel sized paperback books could be purchased cheaper from other sources.
Book Fair
Book fairs provide an immense selection of books in one location. Most book fairs only sell books in good condition. Books with torn covers and highlights are often not sold.
The prices of the books vary on the day you attend the fair. Big book fairs sell books over a three-day span. The most popular books sell on the first day. Going on the first day might mean paying a small admission fee. Attending a book sale on the second day will usually save you from paying an admission fee, however. Books sold on the second say are still sold at individual prices. On the last day, book fairs want to get rid of the books. Some book fairs allow you to purchase all the books you can fit into a sack for a fixed price. The day you should attend the fair depends on whether you are looking for the most popular books, or you are merely looking for books to fill your library.
EBay
Books sold on eBay could be cheap, but do your research. Make sure the seller has a strong seller rating. EBay can be thought of as a zoo, where anything goes. Some sellers might sell non-U.S. edition books, but list them under their U.S. ISBNs. The benefit of eBay is buying in bulk. Some sellers will sell 100 books for $50. Buying in bulk from Ebay would be a wonderful way to start your library. Afterwards, you can spend your time looking for more specific books through Amazon and Facebook.
Friends and Family
Friends and family might provide a source of cheap books. Some family members might even give you some books for free. Though the selection is not that big, family and friends will provide you with cheap books for your book collection.
A book collection gives you instance access to an assortment of books. Making a book collection is quick and inexpensive. Within a few months, you can have a large selection of books available to you at all times of the day.
