Step 1: Use stakes and string to delineate the line that the brick fence posts should follow.
Step 2: Calculate where you want each fence post to be located. Stake out the exact footprint of each post, using strings and stakes.
TIP: Keep in mind that wrought iron and cast iron fence panels are available in specific lengths. Choose your fence panels first so you know the proper spacing of the brick posts.
Step 3: Level the area in between the stakes that represent the footprint of the post. Remove any grass and make that area perfectly level, even if the terrain slopes.
Step 4: Mix the first layer by combining one part dry concrete mix with one part sand. Add a layer over the smoothed area that is ½ thick.
Step 5: Mix some concrete mix with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Add a layer of mixed concrete over the sand and concrete mixture that is a inch thick.
Step 6: Start building the brick fence posts onto the top of this pad of concrete immediately. Use concrete as mortar between each brick and carefully stack a full layer before beginning on the next layer. Use a trowel to work with the concrete.
TIP: There are many designs of brick fence posts. Decide on a pattern that fits the rest of the architectural and landscape elements, as well as your skill level.
Step 7: Continue building the brick fence post until it is complete. Make sure that the mortar joints are properly filled to help prevent water damage. Angling the top bricks to shed water, or even using a metal cap on top of each fence post can help prevent water from creating problems later on.
Step 8: Allow the concrete to cure for a full week before attempting to install other aspects of your fence into the newly built posts.
