How to Build a Campfire

Janis Bennett
Having a campfire in your back yard, or at a campsite, is a great way to relax and hang out with family and friends. Campfires spark conversations, keep you warm on a chilly summer evening, and are an enjoyment for any age. The best way to start a campfire is by utilizing the "tee-pee technique".

Step 1: Arrange long pieces of wood so they are standing vertical with the bottom forming a large open circle and the tops lean up against each other and support the tee-pee looking structure.

Step 2: Crumple up newspapers into tight balls and place in the middle of the wooden tee-pee. You can also add cardboard or light kindling wood to the newspaper, filling up most of the center of the tee-pee.

Step 3: Light several pieces of newspaper around the base of the tee-pee structure. The flames will start to ignite the paper and kindling on the inside, and thus will light the heavier wood in the tee-pee shape. This shape provides maximum air movement to help the fire start quickly and burn nicely. As the wood burns, the tee-pee will collapse and you can continue to add wood to keep the fire going.

Step 4: Enjoy your campfire!

Step 6: When you are done, make sure to put out the fire with water using a garden hose or something similar. Make sure fire is completely out. If at a campsite you will want to put sand on there too, if possible. Make sure there are no more burning embers that could flare up.
