How to Build Your Confidence for Public Speaking

Know your audience. If you know who you are speaking to then you can best guess the response to expect from them. As you prepare your speech, imagine the your audience and the possible reaction you will receive from them. Be prepared. The better prepared you are the less nervous and anxious you will feel. Rehearse your topic, practice your speech. Make an easy to follow outline to help you deliver a clear and easily understandable message. Select an appropriate topic. You should choose a topic in which you are familiar with the material. The comfort level you have will be reflected as you deliver your speech. recreate the environment in which you will give your speech in. Try to create the scene.

If you can, rehearse in the room your speech is to be given in. Plan what you will wear as well. Be familiar with your introduction. This will help you feel confident to carry yourself through the rest of your speech. Also a well delivered conclusion will smoothly end your speech. The introduction will introduce your topic, and should be done simple and clearly. The conclusion lets the audience know that you are ending your speech and delivers again what your main idea is. Visualize success. Instead of focusing how nervous you are about giving the speech, focus on how good you will do. Visualize a great speech and a great audience reaction. Deep breathing and relaxation techniques can be used before it is your turn to speak. Relax your mind and body.

Giving a speech while you are up-tight and nervous does not deliver your message you are trying to deliver well. Think about what you are going to say rather than what you are going to feel. The more you think about how anxious you are going to be, the more anxious you will be. Giving yourself a mental pep talk can give you confidence. When you feel yourself getting nervous, use positive messages to replace the negative thoughts. Practice makes perfect, well closer to perfect. The more you get up and deliver a speech to a large group or even small, the more comfortable and confident you will become. Jump at any chance you can to deliver you ideas through a speech.
