How to Build a Deck Using the Dek-Block Pier System

Save 25% Over Traditional Deck Building Methods

Building a deck is a fun project for the do-it-yourselfer that adds fun space and value to your home. Using the Dek-Block floating pier system to build your deck will save you time and money. Dek-Block piers is a floating foundation system that can be used just about anywhere.

Most building codes will allow the use of Dek-Block piers but you should check with your local building department first for permit requirements. As a building inspector I have both used the Dek-Block system to build several decks and have seen them used with great success. When someone comes into my office to talk about building a deck, I have no problems with encouraging the use of Dek-Blocks.

What is the Dek-Block floating foundation and how do you build a deck using them. Dek-Blocks are a pre-cast concrete pier. Using these pier allows you to avoid digging holes for frost footings, mixing concrete and setting posts.

In normal deck construction you would have to dig holes below the frost-line to set 4x4 posts. Then you would have to set the posts, mix and pour concrete to set the posts. Digging holes is time consuming and back breaking work. This work is eliminated with this system.

Here is how to build a deck using the Dek-Block pier system. You will first set the first two corner blocks as near your house as possible. Use a 2x6 board and 4x4 post to level out the deck. The Dek-Blocks have slots cast right into them for the insertion of posts and boards.

Next you will use another 2x6 board and post if needed to position and level the outside corners of the deck. Once these corners are set you can continue to set the remaining piers.

Set a 2x6 joist in the end piers, set the remaining piers and finally attach the 2x6 joists to the end board.

Once you have all of your joists set you can then attach your surface boards to the joists. The surface boards will be installed perpendicular to the joists. Use at least two screws at each joist to secure the surface boards.

That's it, you are finished! Now attach rails, benches and other accessories you may want and you have a complete deck. Please be aware that most building codes require a guard rail be attached to the deck surface if any point on the deck surface is 30 inches or more above finished grade. Consult with your building department for guard rail requirements to be sure you have a safe deck.

Building a deck using the Dek-Block pier system can save you time and money. On average you can save about 25% of the cost of building a deck in the traditional manner. • Build a deck without digging holes.
  • Save about 25% over tradition deck building methods.
  • Accepted by most local building codes.
No need to dig holes and pour concrete for frost footings. These piers sit on top of the ground and float with seasonal changes.
