How to Build a Gate

Amy Whittle
Knowing how to build a gate ensures that you can finish your fencing project professionally. While gates are made of all types of materials, wooden gates are often the easiest to construct for homeowners. Building a simple wooden gate, made of the same pieces of wood used for a privacy fence is a reasonable project for most homeowners.

Step 1: Measure the distance that the gate needs to span.

Step 2: Place enough boards in a row to span the width that you measured in the first step. Cut the boards as necessary to the width restrictions.

Step 3: Cut two rails will span the width of the gate out of a 2x4.

Step 4: Place the planks over the rails, making sure the rails are within 12 inches of the top or bottom of the fence. Nail through the planks and into the rails, with two nails for each board where it intersects with each rail.

Step 5: Turn the gate over. Cut two pieces of 2x4's that will span between the rails and create a box shape. Nail through the rails and into these 2x4's to connect the rails together.

TIP: If you intend to use hinges that are installed directly on the rails and on the right side of the fence, you can skip this step.

Step 6: Cut another piece of 2x4 that will diagonally connect the rails to form a Z formation. Nail the piece so it connects to the rails.

Step 7: Cut the bottom of the gate if necessary to ensure that the bottom is completely flush across all of the boards using a circular saw. Cut the top of the gate as well if needed.

Step 8: Hang the gate using heavy hinges and screws. Make sure that the gate is plumb within the opening using a carpenter's level.

TIP: Hinges that are decorative and are therefore installed on the outside of a fence and gate are often preferred for first timers. Just be sure that you are screwing through to the rails, and not just the boards that make up the door.

Step 9: Install a latch at the other end of the gate to keep it shut when it is not in use.
