How to Build an Indoor Privacy Screen
Materials:
3 -17 x 72 inch boards. one by two inch in thickness (MDF or your choice of wood)
Hand drill
Saw
Sandpaper
12 screws
4 two way hinges
Paint brush
Stain or paint (optional)
Thumbtacks (optional)
Hand carving tools (optional)
Chalk paint (optional)
Cork board (optional)
First determine the size of your screen. Cut your wood in the desired height and width with a saw. For a six foot high privacy screen; the three boards should be cut into a 72 inch by 17 inch piece. You can also get the wood pre cut at a home improvement store. You should have three panels. Then, sand down any rough edges on your panels with sandpaper.
Next you should decide what pattern or design you want on your screen. Come up with a design that fits the room. Maybe you will want to paint or stain your screen. You can try covering your panels with fabric. If you decide to use fabric, you can use thumbtacks to attach fabric to each end of the panels. Another idea is to carve out and design the wood with hand carving tools. You can also add cork to the exterior of your screen to post notes or pictures. Another great idea is to paint the exterior with chalk board paint. You can find chalk board paint at Benjamin Moore, Dick Blick Art Materials, or a home improvement store near you. Once you have your wood covered with fabric, stain, or whatever you choose, you are ready to drill holes. Drill your holes for your screws so that the wood won't split when you add your hardware.
Next, connect the three panels with the hinges and their hardware. Most of the hinges come with screws. You should have one inch or two inch wide hinges depending on the width of your three panel boards. You can find hinges at any hardwood store like Lowes, Home Depot, or True Value. Use the hand drill and screw the boards together to make three rectangular frames. Once you have attached the hardware you can stand the structure up. Your piece can now be used as a tri-fold privacy screen.
