Points to consider
So if you have decided that you are going to build that kennel for your dog, there are quite a few things that you need to keep in mind.
Design it so that it provides complete comfort to the dog and is also convenient for you as the owner. See that it is made in a way which will allow you to keep track of your dog when he is in the kennel. Let it also be built so that your dog can see you or family members come and go out of the house, or enable him to see your car coming into the driveway or leaving it. Locate it in such a space that the dog cannot see people walking on the side walk or when cars are passing by. This may cause him to bark unnecessarily causing a nuisance to you and your neighbors. Design your kennel in such a way that it has an outdoor area, and an indoor area where the dog can go to when it is raining, or when the sun is too hot.
Decide on the materials that you are going to use for building the kennel. Consider steel as the first alternative as it is easy to clean and will never splinter or break easily, which may cause an injury to your dog when he goes in or out of the kennel. Wood is the most popular choice, but wood kennels can be a material that gathers mold or fungus and this can prove detrimental to your dog.
A kennel must be made so that maintaining it is easy and it is also very easy to clean. The cleaning process must be convenient to you and the dog. Build the kennel with a slight slope that allows all water to drain away from it and you have no problems of having to dry the kennel before allowing the dog to use it once you have cleaned it. This drainage could help you to use a hose very conveniently and remove any debris or dirt that has accumulated in the kennel. It is also advisable to disinfect the kennel every time you clean it. See that you use disinfectants that are not harmful for the pet. Your vet could advise you correctly on this.
A well built kennel can last for years and is therefore likely to be a permanent feature in your garden or backyard. So build a kennel that looks sturdy, strong and is pleasing to look at. It of course has to be so comfortable that your pet would like to spend a lot of his time there. A dog is a very important member of any family and his comfort and well being is something that you as an owner must always ensure, even if it means that you have to build him that kennel.
