How to Build a More Efficient Website

Timothy Scheiman
If your new to building websites there are some things you need to know to get your website where people will want to visit it. Making it Google friendly is just the beginning. You also want it to load fast and be easy to navigate. The tips I offer you here are the main things you should concentrate on to get your website up and running.

Niche

Whether your making a website for personal use or for your business it must have a theme. This will determine your website domain name, description, title, and content. If your trying to sell some item than your websites theme should be centered around that item. For personal websites it would be developed around your main interest. Your theme or topic should be narrowed down to a very specific niche. Your niche would than be your central theme throughout the website. Without getting into a long SEO discussion your websites keywords will go into your title, description, and content.

Navigation

Your website should be easy to navigate. Use headers and table of contents to manage pages. Links should be provided within the site and off. When a stranger comes to your site he must be able to get around easily.

Graphics

All graphics should be fast loading and be on the sites server. Any graphics you have to pull from another location will slow the down the sites loading time. Your entire sight should be able to load in just a few seconds or you will lose your visitor. Not all people have broadband so the site should load fast for dial-up users.

Keep content fresh

You should keep your visitors coming back by keeping articles and content fresh. One thing you can do is allow visitors to register for the site and add a forum, shout box, or special content that only registered users can get. Give away something free if your selling items on your site. This is always a good tactic and guarantees repeat visitors.

Avoid using too many ads

Avoid using banners and too many ads on your site. Especially unrelated ads that have nothing to do with your sites niche or theme. Filling a website up with ads confuses people of exactly what your trying to offer or say. Ads must be able to blend into the site and not overwhelm them. One quick tip avoid using the word buy on your site. Its better to say "get yours now" or "get it here".

Domain name

Its the best thing to have your own domain that is easy to remember. Avoid using free sites to sell merchandise. Free sites work fine for personal sites but if you want to get serious get a domain which goes along with what your selling.

Plan your sites layout

If you were building a store for your business you spend time getting a building ready. The same holds true for your site. Its your store and you need to take your time and plan its layout to get visitors. You can pay someone to do it and get a very professional website. However, the free tools that are out there you can build a website very easily in a short time.
