Usernames
Usernames are very important in the process of building your name on the Internet. All of your usernames should be exactly the same and should contain your name, either legal name or handle that you would like to be known by. I have made this mistake and it has hurt me when promoting myself, websites, and my articles as a freelance writer and a website owner. Correcting the mistake takes time, as I have learned from experience. Something as simple as using Mike half of the time and Michael the other half splits my recognition and location of my websites and articles on search engines, thus lowering my views and in turn costing me money. Keeping your username the same, and having it contain your name will increase your search engine results, and raise the possibility of someone knowing who you are and searching for your websites, articles, products, etc.
Blogs
A self named blog can do a lot in terms of name recognition. There are countless blog websites that offer free blogs. This is a great opportunity to set up blogs in your own name/handle under each blog site (ex. MichaelLuchies.blogspot.com). Wordpress, Blogspot, and Today.com are three great places to start to set up a blog using your own name.
Websites
In addition to several blogs in your name, you should at least have your own name secured through a domain name and a general web page created. Information on your background, interests, and anything relevant should be listed on this website. This would usually command the top spot on search engines when your name is searched. Web directories and blogs will pick up your website name and expand it for you.
Write Articles
Writing articles online may be the single best way to get your name out on the Internet. Published articles under your name can then be sent to blogs, search engines, and related websites. Writing articles on Associated Content and other similar websites can greatly increase your name recognition throughout the Internet in fields that your have a level of expertise in. My main interest and expertise is in sports and fantasy sports, and this is why when searching my name most of the results will be sports articles which is what I would want someone to stumble upon. Writing articles and reviews (eBay Reviews is great) is a must if you want to build your name on the Internet.
