How to Build a Prayer Closet

Wendy Adams
A Prayer Closet is a private, personal space used for prayer or meditation and is easy to build. To build a Prayer Closet you will need a small closet, or a quiet corner with a few simple comforts like a chair, small writing table, and a shelf for books.

Determine Your Needs:

1. Consider heating, cooling, and ventilation for the Prayer Closet.

2. A quiet area with no distractions and little noise.

3. Privacy.

4. Do you need the room to sit, stand, or kneel?

Find the Perfect Location:

1. Walk around your home with an open mind.

2. Examine every closet looking for locations away from the noise center of your home.

3. If you can't spare a closet find a quiet corner away from windows where noise happens.

4. If you live in a two story home consider the closet under the stairs.

5. A corner of the basement can be cleaned out and divided from the rest of the area.

What to put in your Prayer Closet:

1. A new or used comfortable chair.

2. Small writing table or folding table.

3. Good reading lamp.

4. Small area rug.

5. CD player with noise reducing head phones.

6. Pad and Pencil for writing down any distracting "to do" thoughts or for journaling.

7. Prayer and reading material.

8. Small Blanket

9. Small table top fan

Remove everything from the space to avoid distraction and clean thoroughly.

Set boundaries for the Prayer Closet:

Prohibit children from running or playing nearby

Restrict television watching or music volume during worship

Insist on privacy with no interruptions

Set times for worship in your household

Tip If money is not an object consider purchasing a free standing Prayer Closet from a church furniture company. A standard Prayer Closet is the size of an average second bedroom closet and can be placed in any room as a beautiful piece of furniture.

Safety First: If you plan to use candles in your prayer closet avoid tapered candles in unprotected candlestick holders. Votive candles in deep glass candle holder are much safer. Never leave a burning candle unattended and only burn candles in properly ventilated areas.

This is just about the silliest thing I've ever heard. Sitting in the dark in your own closet talking to an imaginary friend. Read a book instead. And by a book, I mean something not written thousands of years ago by illiterate peasants in a desert.

Thanks for a great aritcle Wendy. Welcome to AC. I think you'll enjoy the site. I did enjoy your Prayer Closet tips. You're right on the mark with this. I feel that when I pray, distractions come via phone's ringing, door bell, nearby traffic, & even interference from the wrong type of spirit intervention. I feel demons would do anything to prohibit our communication with The Father. Michael was dispatched to come to prevent this "prince of the kingdom of Persia" from preventing another angel from delivering a message to Daniel (Dan 10). This "prince" was likely from the fallen angels or Satan himself, so your advice is well taken. Thanks, great job here friend! : - )
