How to Build a Rabbit Cage with Storage Cubes
Building a Storage Cube Rabbit Cage Condo is Easy and Your Bunny Will Love You for It!
A storage cube bunny condo is the best cage for your rabbit, it's spacious and fun with as many hopping levels as you care to build. All you need are grid storage cubes, zip ties, and various materials for matting and support for the levels. Your bunny will love you for this so build it as large as your space allows.
Typical rabbit cages are much too small for bunnies. Bunnies need to jump, climb and stretch out to rest. Often they run around (jump around) in circles because they have no room to expend their energy. Unless the bunny is free to roam the house, the cage is oppressive and unhealthy. This is why rabbit shelters are actually now recommending the storage cube grid cage. The expandable and versatile grid cage condo is the best you can provide for your bunny.
First decide the general structure that you are going to build as the cage. How tall or wide, how many levels. Measure the space where the cage will be placed and make sure you factor that into the plan. Since this storage cube grid cage is so versatile you can even build it in an L shape at a corner of the room. Be creative.
The first things you need for the storage cube cage are grids. Look at the picture and you can see the square grids that are connected with colorful zip ties. These storage cube grids are 14" by 14" and are available at stores like Target or Bed, Bath and Beyond and are typically about $20. 2 boxes should be enough for a decent size cage. If you want to make a really big cage just buy as many more as needed. Zip ties are widely available and the colored type are nicer looking. The grids and ties will form the basis of the cage.
Next, in order to create levels in the cage condo for bunny fun, you will need a 13.5 by 13.5 supports. The levels can be made using grids but some flat support should be connected on top of those storage grids. Cutting thin plywood to the size is a good way to do this but you may have other materials around that would work as well. If your bunny weighs over 4 lb.s or is a wild leaper, then placing wooden dowels under the levels is a good idea. They are simply slid through the cage's grid walls and under the level, nothing else. These are also widely available, certainly at places like Home Depot. To keep the cage levels comfortable it's a good idea to stick carpet tiles on since they fit easily but material that is clipped to the cage can work as well. The material should not be loose because the bunny needs good traction.
Space the levels in a manner that will allow the bunny to hop from one to the other but with enough head room. An easy way to do this is to place to levels at equal heights on each side of the cage. Then place a level in the middle of the cage but higher. Then follow again with higher levels on each side of the cage and a middle level higher. You are basically switching of side and middle levels. If you look closely in the picture you can see the level structure.
Finally, the cage condo obviously needs a door. This is simply done by connecting a bottom grid only on one side and using a clasp to connect the other side so the door can easily be opened. Another door can be placed on a higher level or even better on the top for easier access for cleaning.
A floor for the cage can be made of a plank of thin wood covered with vinyl tiles followed by fluffy bedding, but there are many other ways to make the cage floor so make what works for you, just make sure it's safe and not easy to chew up. The litter box can be placed in the bottom corner and food dish and water bottle placed wherever is convenient for your bunny.
There you have it, basic instructions for a fantastic storage cube bunny cage condo. An online search for bunny storage cube grid cages should provide you with more ideas and examples of the grid cage condo.
