How to Build a Resume

Tips for Creating a Winning Resume

When creating a Resume, one must realize what the professionals are looking for. A resume, which is also know as a thirty second preview in the business world, is a first impression of the person applying for a specific position within a company. It is recommended that everyone, even if you are settled within a company, have an updated resume. The reason the resume is considered a thirty second preview, is because most business professionals are not seeking to know your life story. They are looking for the basics. Whether you have held a similar position in the past, what qualifications you hold, how stable your job history is, etc.

A resume should only be one page. The preview should not be longer, for most companies do not wish to have to ruffle through sheets and sheets of paper. Most companies now days are looking to have resumes faxed, or mailed through the postal service. Some accept emails as well. When faxing a resume, or any other form to a company, you want it only to have a cover sheet and the main body. It creates less confusion in the long run.

The cover letter of the resume, should hold your first and last name as a header. This creates a way to link the cover sheet to the main body of the resume. Along with the name of the applicant, the resume cover letter should hold these three things. Examples will follow definition.

Intro Statement - The intro statement should consist of why you are seeking a position. What has led to the recent job search. All should consist of no more than 1 paragraph.

Example - Recently with the downsizing of Company X, a company which deals with the provisions of offering technical advice as offering an Internet service, many have been left to seek out positions elsewhere. Company X took inbound customer service calls, offering professional customer service, as well as billing advice, and correcting issues when they applied.

Qualification Statement - This statement should house any qualification that you might have. Never list qualifications you do not have.

Example - While at Company X, I held the title of Member Relation Manager, handling accounts for inbound customer calls, regarding billing, and technical issues, such as overpayment, making a payment, issues with the program they held, and changing certain things with the account, such as passwords, and payment types. I have a proficiency with Microsoft Word, Works, and PowerPoint, as well as running a multi-line phone system.

End Statement - This is a thank you to the company, for taking the time to view the resume, and consider you for the position.

Example - I would like to take the time to thank you for considering me for a position with your company. I feel I would be a great asset to the growth and the prosperity of the business.

Once completing the cover letter of the resume, one must move on to the main body of the email. Regardless of what many professionals say, the resume should only contain such information such as the name, address, phone number, and email is applicable. The other parts of the resume would consist of Education history, Career history, and qualifications.

Well, to be short. Which is funny because I am rather short. Ok I digress. I live in the central/southern part of the US. I enjoy writing, and singing, and I almost have the american dream.  View profile
