How to Build a Successful Online Store

Casey C
When starting an online business the first thing you want to do is figure out what product you are interested in selling. Then find the right website that can help you build your website store, and make sure they include a security seal. Your customers will appreciate this when they visit your website store, and feel secure when shopping with their credit card.

I would honestly suggest Volusions. Volusions requires a small monthly fee, which includes the security seal. Volusions offers customer service to answer any questions you may have, and they will help you build your online store. If you do not know anything about building or designing your website, Volusions has a two week free trial. In this two week period you can learn just as much about building a website as you could if you went to college for a year and took a course in web design.

The most important thing people should know when putting together an online store is to eliminate the "middle man". Using a "middle man" your prices will be higher because you are paying someone else to order these products for you. Most people who start out go to a wholesale site thinking they are getting right through to the manufacturer where the product is being made. This is not true, doing it this way you will have one or two "middle men" to go through. What you will need to do is get rid of these "middle men" and get a TAX ID number.

Getting a business license is not expensive for an online website store, which you will receive a TAX ID number. Having a TAX ID number will allow you to go right to these manufacturers where the product is actually being made. If you visit a wholesale website that does not require a TAX ID number, chances are you will be ordering through a "middle man". This means you will be paying double for the product you want. The idea is to find wholesale sites that require a TAX ID number, and you will see a big difference in your cost per product piece you order.

Paying low cost for your products will make it so you can keep your prices low. It will also keep returning customers coming back to your site, as well as begin making a profit. When setting your website up you will experience more returning customers if you offer free shipping and handling. In order to do this you must adjust your prices right. If you are doing an apparel website store and you have paid five dollars each for blouses you ordered and it retails for twenty-four ninety nine; you will add five dollars on top of the five dollars you paid for the blouse for your profit, then add two dollars for your taxes, and another six dollars for shipping and handling. The blouse now would sell for eighteen dollars, which is still below the suggested retail price. The idea is not to over charge customers or they will not return. You don't have to make a huge profit off one item. Keeping your prices low, you will see more returning customers. This means more sales and better profits. By word of mouth and people talking about the free shipping and handling on your website and with reasonable prices, you will see an increase in customers.

Most people who are going to open an online store get a loan to pay for their inventory. This means you will have to pay the loan back, plus the added interests accumulated with the loan. Paying a loan back could take possibly three years to do. The best thing to do is make monthly orders and pay out of pocket. Build your inventory up till you can start your online store. Always remember when shopping at wholesale sites use your TAX ID number; look for wholesale sites that offer free shipping and handling. These shipping and handling fees add up fast and make it so your prices for each piece you order can go up by two or three dollars, or in some cases even paying five dollars more per piece. Do not just shop at one wholesale site, the more you search around, the more you will find websites offering cheaper prices for the product you are interested in selling.
