With rapid development of the country and the fast paced life that people live they have lost time for nature. People have stopped going to the gardens. Today cities are getting too congested to afford a full fledged garden in one's house, so people have started restricting themselves to a few potted plants in the balconies. Growing of trees and plants is not only essential environmentally but they also help you in relaxing apart from having therapeutic value. High buildings and space restriction does not allow us the privilege of maintaining gardens inside our home, but there is a way out, we can do it on terrace. Terrace gardens support refreshing greenery and provide much needed relief after a hectic day at work.

Choosing a proper Terrace for Garden

Proper and adequate terrace is the first requirement when you are going for a terrace garden. First and foremost you should make sure the terrace on which you are going to build your garden is strong enough to handle the weight of plant and trees. Secondly effective drainage system is a must for terrace garden, so that excess water drains out after watering the plant. Thirdly, your terrace should be water proof so that the walls of your house do not get damp marks.

Planning out a Terrace Garden

Creation is the biggest ability of a human being. The only work you have to do while planning out your terrace garden is to turn your imagination into reality. Terrace garden can be shaped out to any type you want, you can go for rock garden, sculpted garden etc, and it is totally your imagination. The terrace garden can have a mixture of herbs and shrubs, small trees or plants and you can add any type of plant you choose.

Type of soil

The selection of soil has to be done with great care. You have the option to use peat moss or soil rite. You can even mix garden earth or manure if it doesn't cost you much. The soil mixture should be one which does not hold too much water in it.

Type of plants.

When it comes to choosing type of plants, one should go for Fiber rooted plants rather than for tap rooted plants, as tap rooted plants have deeper roots so there is a chance that they may bring cracks to your building. Plants which have soft roots like bamboo, money plant, palms, flowering plant and herbs are good for terrace gardens. Rose plants are good option for terrace gardens. You should always try to go for smaller and beautiful plants like orchids or sunflowers or pansies.

Talking of small plants, one option is to go for bonsai plants; they turn out to be a good option for a terrace garden. They can be easily kept on a ledge or a sill. To maintain a kitchen garden in a portion of terrace garden is another viable option if you can manage them. In that case you can go for tomatoes, lemons, chilies, lady finger etc. If you have right kind of space and can take care of small trees, they are a good option.
