Constipation is often a chronic problem for a lot of people on a daily basis. Using bulk forming laxatives for this group of individuals is sometimes an effective way to solve those problems. There are certain rules however, to properly using bulk forming laxatives. These types of laxatives can also be used regularly, unlike other laxatives which are very easy to become dependent upon.

These laxative types may work within one day, or two. There are others that may work a little quicker than that.

First and foremost, you must use these laxative types on a daily basis for them to work effectively for you. If not used every single day, they are the least likely to help you or do any good. These laxatives act as a stool softener so that bowel movements are easier to pass. So another rule in using these laxative types is to drink plenty of water! If you are not drinking at least 4 or more 8 ounce glasses of water per day, then these laxatives will not work in the right way for you. A danger with not drinking the proper amounts of water with any bulk forming laxative is an intestinal blockage problem. Every person taking this form of laxative should be aware of that.

If people have a diet that lacks fiber in it, then they are likely to turn to bulk fiber laxatives as part of their fiber source. Fiber is what adds roughage and bulk to the stools. Without fiber, the passage of stool is hard. Bulk-forming laxatives do have some fiber which helps this cause.

Psyllium husk is a natural type of bulk forming laxative that helps with regularity. What psyllium does is to absorb the excessive water in the colon while it forms stools. Psyllium husk is not only good for helping to pass stools, but it has an added benefit for lowering cholesterol as well. Psyllium can come in both powder form or in a capsule. The pills in Psyllium Husk are to be used from one time, and up to three times per day. This bulk forming laxative is to be taken with a big glass of water. With the powder, follow the package directions exactly, and stir the mixture into a big glass of water of at least 8 ounces or better.

Before using any of these bulk forming laxatives, it is also important to follow the advice of your doctor about using them and make sure that your doctor treating you has all your medicines noted, even the ones over the counter. Bulk forming laxatives can have some side effects and interactions with other drugs. They should also not be used if you have hemorrhoids.

Getting exercise is also important when using any bulk forming laxatives. Exercise helps constipation since it causes the system to move water through the body, and therefore that helps the colon in forming stool.
