How to Make Burp Cloths from Towels

Kristine Brite
A baby spits up a number of times a day, and their caregivers typically go through many burp cloths a week. Making the cloths at home is a project you can do to save money. You can make a burp cloth from a regular adult towel or a hand towel as a way to recycle; or opt to make your burp cloth out of a new hand towel. Large soft towels make effective burp cloths, and each one can make approximately 12 burp cloths.

Step 1

Cut the towel into 10-by-14 inch sections. Also, cut the fabric into 10-by-14 inch sections. To make one cloth, you need only one piece of towel and one piece of fabric; you will attach them so that each makes up one side of the cloth.

Step 2

Fold the 10-by-14 inch piece of towel in half, making a square.

Step 3

Draw a burp cloth outline onto the towel and cut. The burp cloth outline goes in on both sides and is rounded on the edges. Cut and trace the pattern onto the fabric piece.

Step 4

Pin the towel and fabric together, right-sides together.Stitch around the edges of both pieces, leaving a 3/8-inch allowance on one end for turning.

Step 5

Turn the burp cloth inside-out to reveal the right sides of both fabric and towel. Top-stitch the entire cloth and press.
