The days of picking up the yellow pages and finding the nearest pizza joint is long gone. Now all you need to do is click a link on your computer, smartphone, or GPS to find what business you are looking for. This is great for most business, if they know how to make sure that they are in the top spot on a search ranking. So how does a business go about making sure that they are using search engine optimization to its best ability? Here are seven tips that will help any business achieve better online search rankings.

1. Verify Your Business Listings Online
On a monthly basis, search for your business on the big online search engines. Look for your business on Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, Bing Maps, Local.com, InfoUSA, and Superpages.com. Most all of these sites will have a button or link the states, "Are you the business owner?", or "Claim your business's listing." Make sure that you click these links and verify the information. By doing so, you keep your company information up to date and prevent anyone else from corrupting it.

2. Make Sure To Include All the Basic Information Online
When updating information on the business listings, make sure that the correct address, phone number, email address, website link, hours of operation, and a brief description are included. Make sure that description clearly defines the business your doing.

3. Learn to Enhance Your Online Listings
To give your business an enhance look, include products and services offered. Add a logo, some photos, and coupons if applicable, videos, acceptable payments and any other details that are important to your customers.

4. Use Keywords to Enhance Your Online Listings
Search terms are relevant to your business and it is important that you incorporate them into your listings. Look at your business's core products, services, and location and include the content into your online listings.

5. Customer Reviews Can Enhance Your Online Listings
Encourage your customers and business partners to write reviews about your business. An active website will rank higher in position with many online search engines.

6. Remember to Keep Track of Your Success
Know where you rank now in your listings using web analytics. Check referral reports to see if visitors are using online search listings to find your business. Offer coupon codes and in-store surveys to track how customers find your business.

7. Don't Forget Location Apps for Your Business
Smart phone apps are important to your business as well. Make sure you are listed with the big ones such as Foursquare, Gowalla, and Yelp.
