How to Make a Butterfly Birthday Cake

Tara Cellars
If you would like to make a butterfly cake for a special little girls birthday, it is very easy to do. These are very simple step by step instructions that will make the cake special. First you will need, an eight to nine inch round cake pan, one cake mix, the amount of eggs for the cake mix, the amount of oil or water for the cake mix, non-stick cooking spray, two tubs of frosting, food coloring, and a variety of candy for the decorations. First you will need to preheat your oven to 350 degrees. You will then prepare the cake mix as directed by the box. You will then need to prepare your pan with the cooking spray. Make sure you spray generously. Pour the batter into the pan until it is ¾ of the way full, if you have extra batter you can either cook an additional cake or discard it. The choice is yours, but I would make it into cupcakes. Make sure the batter is even in the pan. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake until they are both done by the toothpick test. If you do not know how to do the toothpick test, here are the directions: All you need to do is insert a clean toothpick into the middle of the cake, pull it out. If the toothpick is clean and does not have any cake batter on it the cake is done.

When the cake is fully baked take it out of the oven. Allow it to set and cool at least 15 minutes. You will then remove it from the pan and let it cool at least another three hours. When it is cool you can start trimming. I have provided a pattern; you can alter it as needed. You will first make a straight cut down the center. This will be the cut that creates two wings. You will then make a cut that will take a triangle on each of the wings. Please look at my pattern, so you do not cut it wrong! You will then have two wings that are ready to be placed together.

On a cake board or a covered cookie sheet, place the wings on the board to form the butterfly. You will now have the body. You are now ready to start preparing the frosting. With the first tub of icing, you can add the food coloring drop by drop until you get the desired color. Then you can frost your butterfly's body. With the other frosting, you should take some of the frosting, about a third of the tub, and frost it with either a darker accent color or completely different color. This will be for the trim and definition on the wings. Please see the photo to fully see where to ice it. You can actually use a flower tip to draw the defining pieces or you can use a writing tip. You will make an outline around the wings and then from the corner of the pieces that were cut.

Next you will be decorating the wings to make them look fancy. For the body of the butterfly, you can us taffy or any other type of candy to form the body of the butterfly. You can then use licorice to form the antenna. You can use M&Ms, gum drops, or Skittles to form decorations on the wings.

You will now have a completed butterfly cake.
