How to Make Button Rings

This craft is so much fun to do! It costs next to nothing and can be completed in a very short period of time. Since buttons come in so many different colors, sizes, shapes and textures, the possibilities are endless. Older children who can sew a few simple stitches will be able to make the entire ring. Younger children may not be able to sew, but they can pick out the combinations of buttons they would like to use. The end product can be bright, dull, shiny, sparkly, round, square, triangular, etc., etc. I hope you have as much fun as I do making these button rings.

Supplies You Will Need

Buttons

Elastic (1/4 inch wide)

If you have been saving your buttons for something, well now is the something! If you don't have any on hand, you can buy buttons practically anywhere (craft stores, sewing stores, drugstores, Target, Wal-Mart, etc.).

How to Make Button Rings

First take a piece of elastic and wrap it around the finger of the person who will be wearing the button ring. It should just fit or be slightly loose, otherwise it might be too tight and cut of their circulation. Once you have the correct measurement, sew the edges together with doubled-up thread. It works best to overlap the edges just a bit, so you might want to allow room for that when measuring around the finger.

Pick out 2 buttons. Any buttons you like. Any shape, any color. It works best to put a larger button on the bottom of the ring and smaller button on the top of the ring. Lay the rings over the elastic edge you just sewed, putting the larger button on the bottom and the smaller one on top. Sew the 2 buttons firmly onto the elastic. Tie off the thread under the buttons. And you're done!

You can try gold buttons for a "rich" look. You can use red and green buttons to make a Christmas ring. You can use 1 button if you prefer for a more simple style. You can even use 3 buttons if you want to make a more "outlandish" button ring.
