How to Buy Christmas Presents on a Small Budget

Garage Sales, Craig's List and Paperback Swap

Buying Christmas presents for children every year doesn't have to bust the budget and shouldn't put you in debt. When you don't have a lot of money to spend on Christmas gifts, get creative and keep the Christmas spirit alive for your children by skipping the toy stores and department stores.

Christmas Shop at Garage Sales and Thrift Stores

Young children won't know or care if their toys are not brand new. Start Christmas shopping during garage sale season to find toys, games and clothing at reduced costs. Once garage sale season is over, look in thrift stores for used toys that are in great condition. Many toys are sold at garage sales or donated to thrift stores when they have hardly been played with. It's easy to find toys in like-new condition.

Check Craig's List for Christmas Gifts

Older children may like gaming systems, games and MP3 players for Christmas. This can be a bit harder to manage than toys and games for younger children. But, it's still possible to save money when Christmas shopping for these more expensive items. Check Craig's List for used gaming systems and for games that go with a system you currently own. It's possible to find great deals in plenty of time for Christmas. The trick is to start checking the listings as soon as possible, before the Christmas shopping rush starts.

Find Used Books for Christmas Gifts at Paperback Swap

If you haven't discovered it yet, check out the on-line book swapping site called Paperback Swap. Simply list ten used books that you are willing to part with and begin searching for books that you would like to either read yourself or give as Christmas gifts. The only cost to you is the cost of shipping. When you mail a book to another paperback swapper, you pay the cost of shipping. But, when you request a book and it's mailed to you, there is no fee. It all evens out in the end. But, this is a great way to find Christmas gifts for children and adults that are avid readers.

It's possible to celebrate Christmas with children without spending money you don't have. Be creative and do some thrifty Christmas shopping at garage sales, on Craig's List and through on-line sites like Paperback Swap.
