1) Register on the Gunbroker website. Gunbroker is similar to Ebay, but for firearms and firearm related accessories. It is the largest on-line auction site for firearms I have found. There are some good deals to be had on the website, and some that are not-so-good. However, this article is more concerned with the resources available on Gunbroker than the items sold there.
2) Once you are registered (there is no charge), search for Federal Firearms License holders (FFL's) in your area who are willing to handle transactions for private parties. Firearms can only be mailed to FFL's. Many will handle these transactions for a small fee. The FFL holder must complete a federal form and submit your information for a background check once the rifle arrives.
Gunbroker allows you to search for FFL's near you and even lists the fees they charge to handle the transaction. Make sure you contact the FFL you intend to use prior to having a firearm shipped to him/her.
3) Shop away! You now have everything in place to shop for firearms on-line. There are literally hundreds of gun dealers who have a web presence. Shop around and enjoy.
