How to Buy Gifts for Men

No, This is Not an Impossible Task!

Brenda Keener
The last presents to buy for any season, particularly during the holidays, are those for the men in our lives. Why are men so hard to buy gifts for? Because they usually go out and buy the things they need when they see them, and the latest fashions, fragrances and home decor ideas usually score about a 2 out of 10 on their "must-have" lists.

Sooner or later, every female has to face the dilemma of how to please men with gifts. Here are some great ideas to help.

1) The Way to a Man's Heart is Still Through His Stomach!

As most men are horrible at baking (pardon my sexism here), a home baked treat such as a cake or fudge is always welcome. Most of the men I know also love homecooked meals. If you have a bachelor relative or friend, why not print him up a nice certificate promising him a home cooked meal of HIS choice?

Many of the men I buy gifts for also have a long term love affair with beef. Here is a link that provides free shipping for Montana organic beef - the kind you just don't get in the grocery stores: Get Free Shipping With Montana Legend On Orders of $130 or more . If you combine this gift with an old Western movie and a cowboy hat, you have the whole theme together.

If your man is more health conscious,Fruit & Wine may be a better way to go.

2) Men Love Experiences

The men I know are far happier if they receive tickets for something they want to do than another tie. Ideas include paying the greens fee for his favorite golf course, movie tickets ( check this out for good prices -Give the Gift of Movies - Fandango Bucks ), a fishing license, concert tickets, and travel. I bought my hubby 49'ers tickets off Ebay this year for a great price, I suggest surfing eBay! to find great rates on all kinds of tickets and travel.

3) Men Feel More Manly When Handling Power Tools - Always

Ever ask a guy to borrow his tools? I have - it doesn't work. Men guard their tools like they were crown jewels, and there is nothing happier than a man with the latest power tool in his hand. Does he need it? Probably not, but trust me, he will FIND a reason to use that tool even if he has to break something first in order to fix it later.

Here is the best online source I have found for power tools, they charge a flat shipping rate of $7.98 per shipment and have all the great brand names such as Makita and Dewalt. ToolKing.com My suggestions include right angle drills for those hard to get screws, a nail gun (especially if you want him to fix the fence in the back yard), a cordless screw driver, and a nice set of really good screwdrivers. Right angle drill bits are also inexpensive and men love 'em. Titanium drill bits are another man pleaser.

4) Free Gifts He Will Like

Have you already spent your limit, and are looking for just ONE MORE THING? If this man is your significant other, why not make him a coupon book using your computer and printer that has these coupons - redeemable throughout the year.

- Just for one day, I promise not to nag you about anything, I mean ANYTHING.

- Good for one interrupted football game, without any commentary or questions from me or the kids

- Good for one free pass from mowing the lawn

- Good for one free night out with the boys with no complaints

You get the idea...

In general, when shopping for men, remember that they just don't think like we do. A great smelling bottle of cologne will probably go on the shelf, not to be worn until we remind them that they have it and we bought it for them.

A day at the links will be remembered and appreciated.

Make sure you know his hobbies well, and inventory what he already has before making purchases. Hide them well, men are worse snoops than children! And watch his delighted face when he receives his thoughtful gift.

As a self proclaimed expert on men's gifts (see my blog at www.themensgiftguide.com) I can certainly say that your thoughts are right on. It takes a different mind set to buy for him than for her. I think the reason most of have trouble buying for the opposite sex is because our minds work completely differently and it takes years of practice to learn to think the right way. You obviously have a great deal of experience!
