Although there are many available options, you have to consider your budget. If you are low in budget, you can consider buying a good pair of shoes, and having taps added on to them at a profession shoe store. Sometimes, the overall price can be quite cheaper while preserving the quality.
Just like any other pair of shoes, one of the main focuses is whether or not the tap shoes are comfortable to you. After all, if you're comfortable in them, you'll probably have a better performance and enjoy yourself in the meantime too.
As for the materials of the shoes, there is a couple that you can choose from: light, suede type, heavy leather or imitation leather. While the shoe is important, it is also important to focus on the heels of the shoes where the tapping will be going on. Thick heels can be triple layers thick, and up to an inch high. If you're new at tap, you may want to avoid higher heels. Taps can be made of leather, plastic, or canvas. It is important to take into consideration the quality of the heels and whether they'll be able to withstand the wear and tear - not to mention, the immense pressure that will be placed on them. Also, note that the sound coming from the heels sound pretty good (crisp and clear) as well.
A good pair of tap shoes is one that you will comfortable in. Check the soles to make sure it is a good fit. Most tap shoes also have cushions placed at the heels and soles. It will make your tap dancing experience much more enjoyable. Before purchasing a pair of tap shoes, it is important that you walk around in the shoes to ensure that they are comfortable to your feet. Are there any tight places or is it too loose? Do not hesitate to dance in them as dancing is different from walking, and there will be different areas which may need to be looser or tighter. Keep in mind to purchase tap shoes that are half a size bigger as tap shoes are often smaller.
As for the type of material to go with, of course, the leather ones are better than the plastic material, and may be more comfortable. However, the most important thins is whether or not they are comfortable .The rest may have to depend on your budget.
The most popular tap shoes are normally Oxford although many women will choose Mary Jane too.
