How to Buy Pet Insurance

Chances are if you have a pet in your home you love that furry or scaly little guy with all of your heart. If you're like most American pet owners you think of your pet as more than just a pet, it's your child. Pets, just like your human children need the proper health care, and just like with humans the cost really do add up. The cost of a vet visit can cost the same if not more than you visiting your doctor, depending upon why you're there. Buying pet insurance can really help you off set the cost of taking care of your furry friends. The following steps will help you find the right insurance for you and your pet.

1. Before you buy pet insurance consider a few factors. If you don't have a pet you obviously don't need it, but if you have a pet you plan to keep for a long time this will be a wise investment.

2. Contact your insurance provider for information on policies they may carry for your pet, some leading companies have begun to carry this service. If you company isn't one of the pet friend companies, all is not lost. You can go online and get contact information for some pet friendly insurance companies. The major providers include PetCare Pet, PetsHealth Care, Premier Pet and Veterinary Pet Insurance.

3. Talk to your vet about the possibility of buying pet insurance. They, as well as the insurance provider will be able to tell you what you'll need covered in the policy. Your vet will be a better source of information due to the fact that he knows your pet and what they will need down the line. He will be able to give you a better insight to what your pet's specific breed is prone to, which will help you buy your policy.

4. Ask for quotes from various companies.

5. Compare the rates from each company, and compare the policy. Different companies will have different clauses in the policies. They may cover the same procedure, but each may pay a different amount.

6. Always ask for a discount or a special rate for the type of pet you have or if you will be insuring more than one pet. Most insurance companies will be happy to accommodate you when you ask.

7. If you absolutely want to stay with your current vet, make sure the policy allows that or has a certain network you must chose from.
