Whether your retirement is decades or years from now, there are some things that you need to think about now to take advantage of the time that is on your side. Namely, where you will spend your retirement years. If you'd like to snooze under a palm tree on a piece of land in a tropical paradise that is all yours, it's not as far fetched as you might think. With the wise use of time, money, and some smart planning on your part, there is a slice of heaven with your name on it somewhere!
First, you need to consider exactly where on earth you'd like to live; some very attractive areas for many reasons are Honduras, Belize, Costa Rica, and Panama. Of course, a lot of the decision comes down to personal taste, but also make sure you think about the political climate in the area, the stability of the economy, possibility of natural disasters that could turn heaven into...well, you know, and other points to ponder. All of this should be sorted out in your mind before you think about investing.
With the location planted firmly in your mind, the financial aspects are important. Since we're assuming that you have time on your side, use it to your full advantage. If you have the financial resources now, purchase a piece of land where you wish and begin planning the future. If you do your homework and choose a desirable location, the value of that land is sure to increase, so you will have an excellent chance to make money on your investment if your retirement plans change, but you will have your reservation in paradise if the plan stays true to what you originally anticipated.
If money is tight right now, you can still use time to your advantage. Just as you would do with a primary home, you can get a loan to purchase retirement property and make payments on it as the years go by. Eventually, you will have a piece of land, paid for in full, that is worth far more than what you paid for it originally. This is fun as well as wise.
A final word of caution----you really have to check out all of the legal and financial implications of the investment before you do anything. However, if its right for you, and the details work out, paradise is going to be a part of your exciting future retirement plan!
