Decide what kind of television you want to purchase. There are many different makes and models. There are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), Plasma and projection televisions. LCD and Plasma televisions are smaller (they are the kind which can be hung on a wall). So if you have limited room those may be the way to go.
Figure out what size will be suitable. If you already have an entertainment center with a fixed size, this is important to take into consideration. You don't want to purchase a television from the store, only to find out it was too big.
Decide if you want standard definition or high definition. High definition offers better picture quality and will be able to play Blueray DVDs (standard def. tvs can play them, but it will look just like a normal DVD).
Standard definition televisions have 480 horizontal lines of resolution that make up it's picture image.
There are two forms of high definition. 720 HD will offer 720 horizontal lines of resolution, while 1080 offers 1080 horizontal lines of resolution. Judging by these statistics, 1080 HD has over twice the definition and picture quality of a standard definition television.
Visit the websites of a store you might purchase your TV from. This will help you get an idea of what kind of selection it will have. You can narrow the televisions down to particular kinds (LCD, Plasma, HDTV, etc.). From here you can see all the televisions that fit your criteria. Pick out several televisions that fit what you want.
Read what other people have said about the products by reading the reviews. Sometimes you can find out negatives of the product that may detour you from purchasing it. For example, the Target brand LCD television is prone to burning out pixels on the television (reference?), which leave just black dead spots in the picture. Knowing this information would probably keep you from buying the TV.
Visit the store to see the television in person. Sometimes this is all that it takes to decide on the perfect television for yourself.
