How to Buy a Used Truck for the Winter

A Lifestyle Choice?

Dan Reveal
Your need to buy a used truck especially for the winter is probably based on a certain lifestyle.

You might have taken a temporary and seasonal job working in the cold weather, for example, and need a used truck just for the winter.

Regardless of your reason, you will want to buy a used truck for the winter by first considering its features--whether these make the used truck reliable and worth the money you are wiling to pay for it.

The Question of Mileage

The question of how many miles is likely to come up in any discussion about a used vehicle. It is also logical that a used truck that has low mileage will probably cost more.

Since you are going to buy a used truck for the winter only, however, you might be willing to buy one with more mileage just to keep the cost low. Your used truck will have the selective and perhaps temporary purpose of getting you to your cold weather job.

In this, high mileage won't be a major concern.

Winter Safety Features

When you buy a used truck for the winter, you will also want to look for features that are especially relevant to winter safety.

For example, if your goal in buying the used truck is to get to work on time going down winding country roads, wouldn't it be good to have one that has four wheel drive? Winter is a time of muddy conditions.

Additionally, because your used truck is meant for driving in winter, the tires have to be in a condition that's suitable for icy roads. The tires might not have to be perfect because you aren't going to be using the truck all year long, but they still have to be good enough for winter driving.

Further, when you buy a used truck for the winter, an engine should come as close as possible to being in good condition.

Why would you want to be stranded in a high mileage truck that didn't cost very much and yet has an engine that refuses to start?

As you buy a used truck for the winter, you will want to have these kinds of priorities in order.

A reliable engine, for example, is much more important than the appearance of a used truck. Still, because it's winter, you don't want a used truck that's full of rust and holes.

The same good judgment that goes into buying any used car or truck applies to buying a used truck for the winter. The difference lies in how and when you are going to be using the truck.

Buying a used truck for the winter is different than buying one for the summer.

Getting a used truck for the winter is a good idea, especially if your usual car is light, and would go sliding all over the place.
