How to Buy a Week's Worth of Groceries on $100

For a Family of 4 -5

Kelly Fleming
In today's economy stretching your dollar and saving every last penny will help you to get through the recession. The price of food has dramatically increased over a short period of time. At least gas prices have gone down.

If you are on a budget like most American Families you will need to watch what you spend, and try to save more. I am going to show you and give you some tips on how to grocery shop for your whole family (4 or 5 people) on $100 a week. You can shop for less but you want to make sure that you still have snacks available to munch on.

This does not cover other expenses like pet food, if you have a baby this will not cover formula and diapers. Also toiletries are not included in this list of items. If you plan your money right and spend accordingly then you might have some extra to buy the other necessary items that you require.

I am being this plan over 5 days with 2 adults and 2 children. You will need to break the money into different parts like dinners, lunches, breakfast, snacks, and drinks. Dinner should have the majority of the money. Based on 5 days give yourself $8 a day for dinner this may seem small but you can buy a lot for $8 a day. This will work out to $40 some days you will require less while others days will need more. An example of an easy tradition dinner is spaghetti. You can get a pound of hamburger for around $2.50 unless there is a sale. Noodles will run you about $1 and the sauce if you buy cheaper will be about $1.50. You will have $3 left over for a side this can be garlic bread, salad, and even a canned vegetable.

Twenty-five dollars should go for breakfast and lunch. Buy a gallon of milk and a box of cereal for about $6 or $7 take a couple of more dollars and get some eggs and cheap sausage links too. Everyone's lunch situation is different, do the kids eat school lunch and do you eat at the office? Whatever the case may be you have around $15 to spend on lunches this can include lunch meat and bread, or cheap frozen meals.

The remaining $35 needs to be divided between snacks and drinks. There are inexpensive drinks out there like kool-aide, frozen juice, and etc. If you need to have a certain drink like pop try and limit yourself. Snacks come in all varieties cheap and expensive use the remaining money to buy snacks for everyone. Some examples are chips, fruits and vegetables, yogurt, and etc.

My Husband did the grocery shopping until I found out he was spending $250 a week. I started doing the shopping for $100 a week we are a family of 5. Everyone still gets what they want and need I look for deals at Walmart, Target and the grocery stores. You will need to modify this plan to work best for you and your family, this works I have done it.
