Buying in bulk has the advantages of saving you both money and time. To gain the most out of bulk buying, consumers have the options of buying a large quantity of individual items that are on sale or buying multi-pack items that are sold at discounted prices. Buying multi-pack products is popular among large-family households who shop at super centers or have memberships at warehouse clubs that specialize in selling multi-pack items. The best products to stock up on include non-perishable items such as cereals, dry pasta, canned vegetables and meats, non-refrigerated drinks, as well beauty and hygiene products. Some advertised sales set limits on the quantity you can buy, while other deals allow you to buy as much as you desire. Most of all, buying in bulk gives you the opportunity to purchase as many of your favorite product before it is sold out or discontinued. Bulk buying saves you time in that you can make fewer trips per week or per month, which in turn leads to less impulsive spending. This is especially important since the U.S. Bureau of Labor reported a 53% increase in food prices in 2007.
Along with the many benefits of bulk buying, there are several drawbacks to consider. For one thing, it is not appropriate to buy perishable items including produce and dairy in bulk unless you are feeding a large number of people who can consume these products before the expiration date. Also, individuals need to buy according to the amount of space that they have to store the items in cabinets, shelves, refrigerators, and freezers. The biggest concern is the effect of bulk buying on the amount of food consumed by a single individual within a short amount of time. As stated earlier, bulk buying is common among large families that are more likely to equally distribute food among themselves; yet, bulk buying can be risky for individuals living alone or small families. Specifically, if people who have tendencies to binge eat are putting themselves at risk for obesity when buying food in bulk. Similarly, junk foods that are bought in bulk should be stored out of the reach of children who may overeat. In other words, some people are programmed into thinking that the more they buy the more they can consume.
Taking account of all the factors, bulk buying is a habit to adopt if you have not already done so. It is beneficial for anyone on a budget such as students and those with large families. Bulk buying allows you to get the most for your money in less time. You will be most successful when you use good judgment in selecting perishable items at hot bargains, when regarding the amount of storage space you have, and when consuming products in moderation. Keep in mind that with the ever rising food prices, it is wise to take advantage.
