How to Make a Cafe Latte at Home

Make a Delicious Espresso and Milk Drink

Elizabeth Beeson
Making a latte is relatively simple. One will need a home espresso machine, a metal pitcher, some espresso-ground coffee beans and milk or soymilk. To make the drink one can start by brewing some shots of espresso.

To brew a shot of espresso, use a home espresso machine and fill the metal brew basket with espresso-ground beans. Make sure the machine is off and fill the top with water. Tightly screw the lid back on and switch the dial to brew. Shortly after the dial is switched, the sound of brewing espresso should be heard.

Make sure that the machine is switched off after brewing and allow up to an hour before removing the lid to avoid being burned by the steam. This also applies to steaming milk. The pressure needed to brew or steam can build up and cause serious burns if the machine is opened prematurely. Make sure to use caution.

A single or double shot can be brewed depending on how strong of a latte is preferred. Once the espresso shot is brewed, it should be poured into a mug.

Next, milk will need to be steamed. Use the steam wand on the espresso machine to heat the milk in a metal pitcher or a ceramic mug. The steam wand should be placed in the milk before the steam is turned on. Their should be a steam mark on the dial on the espresso machine. Turn the dial to the steam mark and listen for the steam bubbling the milk. The pitcher should be slowly moved around while steaming to dispense the heat throughout the liquid. Once heated through, the steam should be switched off and the milk should be poured into the mug with the espresso.

For a fat-free latte, skim milk can be used. For a richer taste, people can try soy milk or whole milk. Sugar can also be added to the mixture to create a sweeter taste. For some flavored options, try adding chocolate sauce to create a mocha latte. Other sauces and syrups to try include hazelnut, caramel, vanilla, pepermint and cinnamon. These sauces can be used alone or together to create flavored coffee lattes.
