How Calcium Can Best Alleviate Various Health Conditions

The Proper Way to Take Calcium to Receive the Most Benefit for Your Health

Joanna Ammons
Calcium is the mineral in the body that builds bones and keeps them strong. 99% percent of calcium in the body is stored in the bones and teeth. The remaining 1 % is found in the blood and is essential to keep a body alive. Without this tiny 1% of calcium, muscles do not contract correctly, blood does not clot, nerves do not carry messages, and the heart does not beat! Calcium is essential to live.

There are only two ways to get this essential 1% of calcium. You can obtain calcium from your diet or from your bones.

If you are not getting it in your diet, your body will pull it from your bones.
The calcium you get from your diet and supplements protects the calcium stored in your bones. Besides the structural benefits, the calcium in the bones serves as the body's "emergency" dose of calcium. If the critical 1 % of calcium drops in the blood stream, your body responds by "robbing" the calcium from your bones to increase the blood-calcium levels. The body actually leeches from the bones in order to make calcium available to the blood stream. Keeping the heart beating and the nerves functioning is more important to the body than having strong bones. The body will do anything to stay alive, including robbing the bones of calcium. Over a period of years, bones will become weak and break easily. This leads to the crippling bone disease, "osteoporosis." This occurs without a person realizing it. Many do not realize the body has been calcium deficient until they begin to experience brittle bones, hormonal changes and weakening teeth.

Osteoporosis is often a crippling and potentially life-threatening bone disease. The worst part of having the disease knows it can be prevented. Up to 50% of all women over the age of 45 have, or will have, this dreadful disease. (Research from Bottom Line Health)

5 million men and counting are affected in the United States. Eating lots of calcium-rich food from adolescence through menopause is the best way to avoid calcium deficiency. However, it is no longer an easy task to get calcium from the food you eat.

The over farming of soil and the use of pesticides and chemicals have depleted much of the food supply of plant derived calcium.

Heavy dieting and "fat free" trends have made high quality calcium products, such as milk, consumed less than in previous years.

Throughout a person's life calcium needs continuously change. Unless a supplement is used, a calcium deficiency that begins early in life will continue to get increasingly worse with age.

The "Wrong" Calcium

many people have been advised to take a calcium supplement. Many people take an antacid as their calcium supplement. While antacids do contain calcium, the question is, can the body use it?, an antacid, has been widely used as a calcium supplement. Tums works by "drying" up your stomach acid to relieve indigestion. However, calcium must be in an acidic environment in order to cross the stomach lining into the blood stream.
By taking an antacid like Turns your body cannot get the calcium it needs to stay healthy. The point is, it doesn't matter how much calcium a person takes, it is the amount that gets absorbed into the body that is important. Turns, like many calcium supplements, include sugar, artificial ingredients and chemicals in its formulation. All of these "ingredients" do not help the calcium work in the body; in fact, they actually work against calcium absorption.

Tums is taken to alleviate pain caused by an upset stomach how does this relate to getting calcium into the blood stream? Many people who are taking a calcium supplement have bones that are breaking, their muscles are wasting away, and they are weak, tired, and stressed. I have also seen many x-rays of patient's abdomens with small, white, torpedo-shaped objects in the digestive track.

Is it a tumor? A bone fragment? No! It is the calcium tablets they took 5-6 hours earlier, undigested and on their way out of the body. These are just a few of the reasons I sought to develop a formula that would get calcium into the blood stream where it belongs.

Most calcium products are not digested by the body. If they were, we would not have calcium-deficient conditions in such epidemic proportions. There are very specific elements needed for calcium absorption.
How is Calcium best taken?

Calcium works most effectively when taken in the form of Calcium gluconate, along with Magnesium carbonate and Vitamin C Ascorbate. This form is the most water-soluble for the body and is completely natural and safe.
It is important to not take Calcium in hard tablet form.

Hard, pressed tablets are difficult to break down and create more work for the digestive process. A powder mixed in water or gel cap is ideal.

Your supplement should contain a 2:1 ratio of calcium and magnesium. This is the ratio most often recommended by doctors.

Calcium works together with magnesium. Without magnesium the body cannot "identify" calcium in the blood stream and will not use it, no matter how much you take.

Calcium and Magnesium should be taken with Vitamin C which creates an acidic environment. Calcium must be in an acidic environment in order to be absorbed.

The Vitamin C Ascorbate creates the mineral ionization, which results in immediate absorption.
The calcium gluconate and magnesium carbonate absorb through the lining in your stomach and get into your blood quickly.

It is important to keep in mind that taking Calcium alone does not work. It must be taken with Magnesium and Vitamin C. Otherwise, what you will have is just a pill sitting in your stomach.
