A lot of people feel that they need to lose some body weight. Some may need to lose more than others. But how do you determine how much to lose? In this article we will tell you about a handy way to calculate your body fat percentage which will guide you in your weight loss goals.

The first thing that you should know when trying to lose weight is that there are no short-cuts. Of course we all want to achieve a desirable body weight quickly, but it is important to remember that only through healthy eating and exercise can a healthy body weight be achieved.

The method that we use to determine your body fat percentage uses the U.S. Navy circumference method. It is important to properly measure yourself to attain a proper result. Use a non-rigid, flexible measuring tape with which to take your measurements. You need to measure:

-Your height (in feet and inches)
-Waist
-Neck
-Hips (only females need this measurement)

After you have each of the above measurements you can use this formula to determine your body fat percentage (this is the imperial version):

Males: (86.01 x log10(waist - neck)) - (70.041 x log10(heightft x 12 + heightin)) + 36.76
Females: 163.205 x log10(waist + hips - neck)) - (97.684 x log10(heightft x 12 + heightin)) - 78.387

If those two formulas sound confusing, don't worry. You can use this handy body fat percentage calculator found here.

Ok, so once you have your percentage what next? Well, to determine if your percentage is acceptable or not, find the category that you fall into... this will tell you if you are at an underweight, healthy, or overweight percentage:

Men: A percentage of between 14% to 25.99% is considered average and acceptable. Anything above 25.99% might be an indication of being overweight.

Women: A percentage of between 21% to 31.99% is considered average and acceptable. Anything above 31.99% might be an indication of being overweight.

Simple as that! We hope you found this calculation and resource helpful!
