How Do You Call into Work?

WRITER
Some days we just feel like getting up to go to work and feel like just staying in. Or you may have something that suddenly came up that you have to attend. Whatever your reasons might be I have heard them all. Many years of management I have accumulated many excuses for employees to call into work.

Car is Blocked
This excuse is very common. I had an employee call me and tell me that his mother or girlfriend blocked his car. He told me that he parked in the garage and they parked there car in front of the garage door and left with a friend.

I have a flat Tire
This is a widely used excuse. Tell your boss that you have a flat tire and can not come into your shift. Most cars have spares or changing a tire does not take all day.

Dog is Sick
I had an employee tell me that he was unable to come to work because his dog was sick. He claims that he had to take care of the poor dog and could not make it to work.

Hang over
I actually had an employee tell me that he was too hung over to make it to his shift. He states that he will be more trouble than a help to the business. That he must take a day off to rest up.

Homework
I can not come in because I have a test or paper due tomorrow. Well I suppose that the employee knew about the test and paper many weeks ago. However, they refused to schedule the time off with the manager.

It is Raining
I can not come in because the weather is bad. They argue that they are unable to drive in the rain and make it to work. They say that it is way too dangerous to drive to work. Or they say that their street is flooded.

My Schedule
Am I on the schedule today? This is the classic one. I know if you have a schedule that changes every week you check your schedule almost everyday. To call 30 minutes after the shift has started to figure out if you have to work is a bad excuse.

No Power
I can not come to work because I have no clean clothes. They tell you that they could not do the laundry because the power has been out all day. I am sure most people have more than one uniform to work.

I am Sick
I can come to work because I am sick and don't have insurance to go to the doctor. This is the classic one. The employee calls in sick. However, shows up the next day fully recovered and ready to work

Good list! Obviously the person complaining about the rain never held down a job in Denver in the middle of the winter. :)

People have to work to much in America. I know France has four day work weeks. Maybe we just take it easy, production would go up and people would not call in as much?

When a friend and his co-worker was visiting us at the river, back in our college days, he wanted to stay an extra day. So Monday they called in work and told the boss the car broke down. Before they arrrived at work lake that afternoon, they got out of the car, mussed themselves up and put grease on their hands and clothes. Their boss felt so sorry for them, he told them to take the rest of the day off!

    Cute article.

Funny topic! Two odd sick calls I have received were. "I can't come in because my windshield wipers don't work" (it was barely sprinkling) and "I quit smoking a couple of days ago and have been eating cinnamon Jolly Ranchers, now my tongue hurts".

to the Mr. mom commeter - "none of us are forced into taking a job" that is wrong.. everyone is forced into a job because in order to survive in society you have to have money.

Interesting excuses. Lame, but interesting! So many people have such poor work ethic. It's very frustrating for those of us who go into work unless we are dead!!!!
