How to Cancel Car Insurance when a Loved One Dies

When a loved one dies an executor is chosen to handle his affairs. This includes arranging the funeral, distributing the loved one's assets, and canceling any outstanding policies. If your loved one had a car insurance policy, you will need to cancel it so that any money left after the premium was paid can be refunded and returned the heirs of the estate.

You will need the following items:

Car insurance policy number
Death certificate

Follow these steps to cancel the car insurance policy:

Step 1:
Locate the deceased individual's car insurance policy. Most likely it will be in a filing cabinet.

Step 2:
Call the number on the car insurance policy and inform the representative that your loved one has passed away. The representative may need the car insurance policy number to look up the account.

Step 3:
Wait for the letter of cancellation to arrive in the mail. Sign it and attach a copy of the death certificate. Mail it back to the company for a refund.

Step 4:
Add the refund to the estate and distribute according to the deceased individual's Will.

Warnings:
If you can't prove the death, you can still cancel the policy, but you won't be refunded any money.
