How to Care for Your Dog!

Theresa L.
Thousands of people fly every day, and many of them take their beloved pets with them. Yet, many do not expect to find out their animals died during the flight.

In a tragic story, eight puppies died on a flight from Tulsa to Chicago. American Airlines, who were shipping the animals, do not ship animals if the temperature if over 85 degrees.

Many other airlines have the same policy as American Airlines. dogs that are kept in cargo holds can develop breathing problems. The airlines take care to prevent animal deaths.

In the last five years, 122 dogs have died during flights within the United States. The U.S. Department of Transportation said that short-faced dogs accounted for half of those deaths.

Many people are already to fly, and with the death of the eight puppies, it will only increase there desire to not travel by plan. However, many people have to keep in mind, it is not just airplanes.

In Austin, a man was arrested for leaving his dog in a hot car. The dog became unresponsive, and the dog had to be put to rest.

If the condition is right, the heat can overwhelm an animal. It is extremely important to treat our dogs like we would ourselves. These two latest incident, that have both occurred within a week of each other, is a prime example of how dogs need to be kept as cool.

Remember, if you have an dog at home and the temperature is above 85 degrees than it is your responsibility to make sure that dog is kept cool.

You can do this in different ways, and the first is by bringing your dog inside. When it is hot, we use air conditioners to cool ourselves down. Now try to imagine yourself with hair all over your body.

I know when it is hot out for me, the first thing I want to do is shave my head. These poor dogs are covered in fur, and for them it is a lot hotter. Shade is not always the answer. In many cases, it is only five degrees cooler in the shade.

Bringing your dog inside is the best way to ensure they do not get to hot. Keep in mind, dogs still need exercise. We wouldn't water our plants during the heat, so you should not walk your dog. Strict your dogs activities, like walks, to early morning or late evening when it is not as hot. Water is essential for everyone. To make sure your animal does not get dehydrated, keep water out for them at all times.

Remember, if the heat is to much for you, than it is to much for your pet.

Great article - when we ran away from Hurricane Ike we brought our dog with us. We checked into a hotel in San Antonio and she checked into the Pet Spa next door. I think she had a better time :)

I would probably drive to my destination if I had to bring my dogs. There is an airline for pets. They sit in the cabin. People go in a different plane.

I just wrote an article recently about the "Dog Days of Summer" where I confronted a lady who was going to leave her dog in the car! It's insane that people don't get it. cheers :)
