The first key to taking care of your glasses is to keep your glasses clean. It makes it that much easier to clean your lenses if you are careful with your glasses. Dust and dirt on your lenses impair your vision, sometimes dust and dirt even scratch your lenses.
When you are putting your glasses on or taking your glasses off, be very careful not to touch the lenses with your fingers. This is a prime opportunity for dust, dirt and oils to get on your lenses, blurring your vision.
To put on and remove glasses properly, hold them carefully with both hands at the temples, about halfway down the sides of the glasses. Gently pull the sides over your ears and and bring them forward until they are completely off your head. Using two hands is very important here, it not only keeps you from touching the lenses but will keep your glasses from being bent out of shape or put out of alignment.
When you aren't wearing your glasses, keep them safely in a glasses case. Hard cases are preferable. Cases serve two purposes: they keep dust, dirt and oils off of your glasses, and they also protect them from damage.
Cleaning Your Glasses
No matter how careful you are with your glasses, at some point they are going to get dirty and require cleaning. When cleaning your glasses, first make sure you have a proper cloth. Sure it seems easy just to rub your glasses with your t-shirt, but wiping the lenses with worn clothing can scratch the lens if you're not careful.
The cloth should be as soft and non-abrasive as possible. You can buy cloths specifically designed to clean lenses for a buck or two, and they last a good long while. They're usually small and easily portable, so you can take one with you wherever you go.
Before you wipe your glasses down with your cloth, rinse the lenses with warm water. Even if you have the softest cloth in town if there is hard dirt on your lens you can still scratch it by rubbing. Rinsing your lenses will remove the most abrasive debris before you give it a wipe down.
It is best to clean your glasses once or twice a day. When you take them off for the night is the best time to do it, if they are getting dirty during the day you might also want to give them a cleaning some time during the day just to make sure they're extra clean.
