The Fancy Mouse - General Overview
The fancy mouse or pet mouse is a domesticated form of the wild house mouse. They come in many different colors, such as black, brown, tan, white, or even a combination of these colors. Even the coat of the fancy mouse can vary from smooth to curly.
The fancy mouse is a great first pet for children. Depending how well you take care of your fancy mouse, its lifespan can reach up to 3 years. Since mice are nocturnal animals, they will spend many hours during daytime sleeping.
Is a Fancy Mouse a Clean Animal?
Absolutely!
You will see your fancy mouse constantly licking and grooming its fur, just like a cat does. Female fancy mice are almost odorless, while the male mice tend to be a bit more smelly. But, if the cage is cleaned regularly at least once a week, including a change of bedding, you should detect no unpleasant smell coming from your fancy mouse.
What to Feed your Fancy Mouse
The fancy mouse needs not only plenty of vegetables, but also seeds, oats, and forms of protein. To make sure your fancy mouse gets all the nutrients it needs to stay healthy, buy formulated mouse food from the pet store. The pet store has a huge variety of mouse food, including special treats to reward your mouse.
You can also feed your pet mouse items straight from your fridge! In moderation, your mouse will nibble cheese, lettuce, or carrots directly from your hands. Feeding your fancy mouse is inexpensive and fun for both you and your mouse.
Since the teeth of your fancy mouse are constantly growing, it needs chew toys in its cage. Pet stores have chew sticks available, but you can also give your pet mouse hard nuts to chew on. And, never forget to give your pet mouse plenty of fresh water.
Where to Keep your Fancy Mouse
A glass terrarium with a wire top is a good choice, because then you can observe your fancy mouse when it plays or eats. Keep your pet mouse in a place where it is neither too sunny nor too cold. Wood beddings are available at all pet stores, but take care to check if the bedding is suitable for pet mice, since the wrong bedding can cause allergies in your mouse. Your fancy mouse is a nest builder, and you can observe how your pet mouse will built itself a bed to sleep in.
Playing with your Fancy Mouse
Teach your fancy mouse how to take treats such as sunflower seeds directly from your fingers. With enough patience, the mouse will learn to climb into your hand to find a reward. You can teach your pet mouse to climb ladders or even have them look in your pockets for treats. Play with your fancy mouse daily, since mice are very sociable creatures. A happy and healthy mouse needs an exercise wheel. Your fancy mouse will spend a lot of time running in an exercise wheel and will never tire of it.
A fancy mouse can be a great companion for any child. Ask your local pet store for more information.
