Hemorrhoids can be a real pain in the butt - literally. But there are ways to help deal with them to help soften the pain and discomfort they can cause. Although these methods can help, if there is excessive bleeding or swelling it is important to see a doctor. Most hemorrhoids are benign and will go away on their own, but some need to be medically treated. So with the disclaimer up that I am not a doctor, only one that has had hemorrhoids, I shall proceed.

It is important when you have a hemorrhoid not to strain when on the toilet. To help prevent straining, make sure to eat a lot of fiber. There are a variety of fiber supplements available in drugstores in a variety of flavors. It is also good to make sure that your stool is soft. In order to keep it soft one can use a small amount of laxatives. I have found that magnesium supplements, however, can also help to keep stool soft. Drinking lots of water also makes a big difference.

Constipation can be one of the symptoms of a hemorrhoid so follow those tips to help keep things moving. Also if you are straining, do not push for more then 30 seconds at a time. If you count to ten as you force, then stop for the count of ten completely relaxing this can help greatly. Sometimes, no amount of straining is going to get it through. That is why it is especially important when you have hemorrhoids that you go when the urge hits you. If you don't, reverse constipation can occur where you are constipated cause you didn't go right away. It is common with hemorrhoids to feel like you have to go, when you don't. Its better to try and be disappointed then not to try at all. It is not good to sit on the toilet too long as it causes excess pressure in that region.

There are a variety of commercial products that can also help with hemorrhoids. Witch hazel wipes are a big help. Wipe after every bowel movement to help keep yourself clean. The witch hazel can also help reduce inflammation.

In addition to the outside care, there are a variety of suppositories and other things that you can use that are applied within the anus. These help to further fight the inflammation, reduce itching and uncomfortableness.

Excessive sitting or standing can aggravate hemorrhoids. This is because these activities cause a pooling of blood. Walking and deep breathing help to move the blood around and are beneficial to recovery. If you do have to sit for long periods of time, or just in general, it is helpful to get a donut pad. These pads are relatively cheap and can make a huge difference in recovery. If driving they help to cushion the rump from uncomfortableness or pain during bumps. While sitting they can be somewhat uncomfortable, but they take off the pressure from the hemorrhoid.

It can be beneficial also to use sitz baths or sit in a tub of water with no chemicals added. This helps to sooth the tissues and keeps it clean. Sitz baths are a special item purchased at drug stores that fit over the toilet. Ten minutes or so on and off during the can help.

So there are a few tips for how to deal with hemorrhoids. Again if bleeding occurs it is good to see a doctor just to make sure you do have a hemorrhoid, or that you do not have a complicated hemorrhoid. If the blood is bright red it means it's coming from closer to the anus so more likely chance it's a hemorrhoid. In any case, hopefully these dips will help to reduce discomfort and encourage healing.
