How to Care for a Laptop

Keep Your Laptop in Optimum Condition

A laptop is a fragile piece of equipment that is often subjected to harsher situations than desktop computers. However, if you want your laptop to last as long as possible, care for the laptop properly. This care doesn't end with simply wiping the laptop off periodically; the internal and external components of the machine require care as well.

Keep it Clean

Wipe the laptop using a soft, clean cloth. Use only cleaners approved for use on laptops. Use cleaners sparingly. Avoid touching the screen with your fingers, as pressure and oils from your fingers may damage the screen. If you use "canned air" to clean your laptop, make sure that the product is made specifically for a laptop.

Keep it Cool

Keep the laptop at the appropriate temperature. If the laptop gets too hot or too cold, damage to the components may occur. Be sure the vents on the sides, back and bottom of the laptop aren't obstructed, and turn the laptop off if it starts to get overheated.

Use the Battery

Care for the battery. Even if you only use your laptop at a desk, you should still unplug it while you are using the computer at least once per week to keep the battery life at its best.

Protect the Processor

Turn your laptop off before you walk around with it. The jarring motion of walking can cause damage to the processor. Don't leave the laptop on uneven surfaces or on surfaces where it may fall or get knocked over.

Protect the Screen

Resist the urge to place items on the laptop. You also should avoid closing items between the keyboard and the screen. Undue pressure on the screen may cause significant damage. Never place food or drinks near your laptop. A little liquid can damage the laptop, and one crumb may wreak havoc on your keyboard.

Keep it Healthy

Protect your laptop from viruses and other security threats. Run a high-quality security suite on your computer. It should include a firewall, antivirus program, and malware, spyware and adware protection. Back up all of the information on your computer in case your laptop is damaged, stolen or lost.
