How to Care for Long Hair

Sarah Holmes
Long hair takes times and effort but the results are well worth it. I prefer my hair long and I have therefore learned some tips to keeping my long hair healthy and strong.

Split Ends

If you have long hair, it is important to take off the split ends when they become problematic. Split ends will only prevent your hair from growing longer than you desire. Therefore, every few months or whenever is necessary go to the hairstylist and have about an inch or two cut off. The stylist will know what you mean when you say you just want to cut off the split ends. They will trim your hair so that it is even on the ends.

Potions

Because you have long hair and you intend to keep it for awhile, I would recommend using as little hair dye on your hair as possible. The hair dye saps strength from your hair and makes it more difficult to take care of. If you want your hair long for some time, you may want to consider not dying your hair or dying it a color that will not look funny if it decides to grow out. From time to time, I highlight my hair. This looks nice but the amount of dye is minimal and depending on the amount of hair dye used, it may not show roots as it grows out.

Hair Dryer

I tend to prefer NOT to use a hair dryer. The reason is a hair dryer is tough on your hair. It will weaken the hair. Again, I love my hair long and I want it to stay long for as many years as possible. Therefore, I will use a hair dryer when necessary (such as before attending an important event), but I do not use it daily. This ensures healthy, long lasting hair.

Curling Iron

A curling iron is also tough on hair. When I want curly hair, I like to get a perm. Because a curling iron takes a lot of extra time and it weakens the strength of the hair if you use it often on the strands. I use curling irons as little as possible. A preferred method is curlers. It is my understanding that curlers don't damage the hair as much.

Strengthening

I like to go to the stylist and ask them to add a strengthening conditioner to my hair when I want it to grow really long. The conditioner stays in for several months and helps the hair cope with outside sources that attempt to damage. I have noticed that my hair grows longer in a quicker period of time without split ends when I have a strengthening conditioner added to the hair. It also makes the hair nice and soft which is an added bonus!

Using these tips will help protect your hair like you would a well loved garment. Treating our hair with respect is the first step to treating ourselves with respect. Remember: you are important and caring for hair is a terrific step to reminding yourself of that importance whether or not you choose to grow your hair long or short.
