During late part of pregnancy certain women develop gestational diabetes. But gestational diabetes does not remain after the childbirth, but complicates the pregnancy and the health of new born baby. Both mothers and babies may lead to certain health related problems.

What is ay gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes is a stage when a pregnant woman produces more glucose or the blood glucose level is higher.

What causes Gestational diabetes?
Placenta sustains the baby's growth and also holds the baby during pregnancy time. Baby's growth is due to hormones produced by the placenta and the same also blocks mother insulin as a result the blood glucose increase in the mother's blood. Insulin resistance makes it hard for the mother's body to use insulin.

Mother's body is not able to use all her insulin as a result her glucose is not able to covert ion to energy and her glucose level increase. High blood glucose may lead to blood hyperglycemia.

How gestational diabetes does effects baby?
In gestational diabetes mother is producing more blood glucose than normal mother and all her blood glucose is entering the baby through placenta as a result the baby is glucose goes through the placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels. This causes the baby's pancreas to make extra insulin to get rid of the blood glucose getting abnormal level of blood glucose, which is being converted into energy. Hence, the baby becomes fat and large.

These babies face breathing problems and as their pancreas produced extra insulin during pregnancy, it may be not able to normally function after birth.

What happens in gestational diabetes mother after birth?
A gestational diabetes mother may lead to type 1 and type 2 diabetes later part of life. It is quite possible that she may again get gestational diabetes in her further pregnancies. Therefore, diabetes treatment may be continued after birth if she is found type 2 diabetes.

How to prevent?
To prevent type 2 diabetes in such cases certain lifestyles have to be changed. They need to reduce their weight drastically. Food habits and diet has to be changed.

They need to eat a lot of green, fresh vegetables and fruits. They need to reduce their fats up to 30%.
Regular daily exercises to reduce fat and burn out any extra fat in the body. Keep checking with blood glucose levels in periodic manner. Keep in touch with your doctor. Avoid drinking alcohol, fatty foods and stress.
