Often we forget that our pets will reach a certain age and they will not be able to get around as quickly as they used to. As your pet gets older caring for them can get a lot more complicated. Dogs and cats often have health problems that begin to surface as the pets age. Of course there are other animals that may start to exhibit signs of aging as well. So what can you do as your pet starts to age to keep them happy and healthy? Below are a few suggestions.
Check ups are a must
Each year you should be taking your pet to the vet to have a basic physical. They will usually check everything, and in some cases take blood work to make sure the pet is as healthy as possible. Your doctor may also ask if you want additional testing done to make sure that there are not underlying issues. At your pets check up be sure to mention any changes you may have noticed in your pet.
Check their food
As your pet gets older their nutritional needs may also start to change. It is very important to check the ingredients on your pet food prior to purchasing. Do your research and see what kinds of nutrients your particular pet needs as they get older. This will help to ensure that they are able to consume food that will keep them as healthy as possible.
Be on the lookout
There are certain health issues that affect certain pets. For example if you have a dog, there are some breeds which are prone to certain illnesses as they age. Knowing what your pet is at risk for, and being on the look out for it will help to make treatment easier. Diseases in pets are often easier to treat if they are found earlier. So learn what the symptoms are so that you can get them to the vet as soon as you suspect anything.
A good exercise routine
Whether big or small all pets need some type of exercise to keep them healthy as they age. Be sure to keep up with your pet routine. If it is running around the house, taking the pet for a walk outside, or making sure that they have enough room in the cage for playing, exercise if very important for older pets.
Comfortable sleep area
Making sure that your pet has a comfortable sleep area as they get older is also important. Some pets may develop arthritis which means they need a more comfortable cushioned place to sleep.
