How to Care for Your Pet Canary

Shannon Frye
Canaries are very popular and a lot of people keep them as pets. These birds can sing an amazing song! The males will always be better singers than the females. These birds will sometimes not sing as much when they are molting. The birds are not as demanding as your average large bird such as a Macaw. They are a great choice for somebody who wants to purchase a bird but doesn't want to have to deal with a very large bird. These birds will not talk but they will sing and they are wonderful singers.

These birds are very small and will not live as long as larger birds. This can sometimes be a good thing. Large birds such as Amazons will live to be around 50 years old and sometimes longer than that. If you want to purchase a bird but you don't want something you will have to take care of for 50 years, you will want to think about purchasing a smaller bird like a Canary. These birds are very cute and small and perfect for somebody who is wants to purchase a bird for the first time. These birds will live to be around 8 to 10 years old in captivity.

When it comes to purchasing a cage for the bird you will want to purchase a large enough cage for the bird to fly around in. You want to purchase a cage with is longer than it is tall. The only way for the bird to get exercise is by flying so you should never get a Canaries wings clipped. You will want to leave the wings alone and allow them to fly around in their cage. You will want to purchase a cage which is not made of wood because they are very difficult and hard to keep clean. You will want to make sure that the bird cannot get it's head stuck in the bars on the cage as well.

You will want to provide the bird with fresh water and food. You will want to purchase some toys for the bird to play with that will not hurt the bird. You will also want to provide the bird with many different perches. These birds will do great by themselves as you do not need to purchase two or more birds to keep the bird happy. These birds really do not socialize with other birds like your typical bird would in the wild. You will want to make sure that you place a sheet over the cage at night and make sure that the cage isn't located near a window where it can get drafty.
