A poinsettia is a plant of the spurge family called the "Euphorbiaceae". It is has large leaves and is most commonly bright red although it may pink, yellow or white. It is usually one to four feet tall.
It came to the United States in the 1800s from Mexico. Mexicans call it a "Flower of the Holy Night".
In tropical areas it grows wonderfully outside. But, if you live in a cold area, it is best to keep it indoors.
To keep it flourishing, place it in the sunniest area in the sunniest room in the house. Do not allow it to get cold drafts from the door or too much heat from a heater, TV or electric appliance.
It should be in a temperature between 50 and 70 degrees. Check the soil every few days. If it feels dry, water a small amount at a time so it can drip down to the bottom of the container. If your plant is wrapped in foil, then cut a hole in the bottom and place it on a saucer or plate before watering.
Despite what many people think, a poinsettia can last well past the holiday season. It is not unusual for a poinsettia to still be beautiful on Easter.
A few secrets to keep it lasting that long include fertilizing it each month. Keep it near a window and keep the temperature and moisture level constant.
Poinsettia's usually do not bloom more than once. You can cut back the stems to 2 leaf buds, reduce the amount of water and put it out in the spring.
Chances are it probably will not make it to next Christmas or bloom again. But, the beautiful bright colors can be enjoyed for several months.
