Carving a pumpkin is a time-honored tradition that children all over America anticipate just as much as trick or treating. From spooky jack o lanterns to silly faces, the intricacy of your carved pumpkin is limited only by your own imagination. Spend an afternoon teaching your children how to carve a pumpkin safely and easily. It is a memory they will remember forever and perhaps pass on to their own children in the future.
Tools You Will Need to Carve a Pumpkin
Sharp knife
Wood or hard plastic rounded spatula
Bowl
Pattern or design idea
Scissors/craft knife
Toothpicks
Tape
Use a sharp knife to cut the top off the pumpkin. Cut a circle around the stem, approximately four to six inches in diameter, depending on the size of the stem. Cut a smooth circle using the knife or create a jagged edge around the stem instead.
Scoop out the inside of the pumpkin using a rounded spatula. Scrap the spatula around the inside of the pumpkin to loosen the squash and seeds. Place the pumpkin in a bowl. Remove the seeds and reserve them to make roasted pumpkin seeds later.
Create the design you want to carve in the pumpkin. Use a pattern from the internet or draw your own on a sheet of paper. There is no need to stick to a traditional jack o lantern. Use any style stencil you like including bats, witches or even words. Cut out the design using scissors or a craft knife.
Tape the pattern to the best side of the pumpkin. Use a toothpick to trace around the cut out parts of the design. Remove the pattern from the pumpkin.
Use a sharp knife to cut out the traced design on the pumpkin. Consider using a small knife, such as a paring knife, to cut out designs that are more intricate.
Now that you have taught your children how to carve a pumpkin, make it a tradition your family will enjoy every fall. Allow everyone in your family to make their own unique or scary pumpkin design for Harvest time, Halloween or even Thanksgiving.
