How to Carve a Pumpkin, Traditional Pumpkin Carving

It's time to start thinking about how to carve a pumpkin for Halloween. Pumpkin carving is a tradition most families do a couple days prior to Halloween. Children and parents have a great time carving pumpkins together because it's fun and gives them quality time.

When my children were younger, we would gather outside at the picnic table and carve the pumpkin. Each one of my children had a part in cutting open, cleaning out and carving the pumpkin. Their hands would get messy but they loved it. Those are memories they will have and I'm sure they will pass on the tradition of carving pumpkins with their children.

Learning how to carve a pumpkin is simple. You can carve the pumpkin into something cute or something very scary, depending on what you are looking for. Below are instructions on how to carve a pumpkin that will help you get started.

How to Carve a Pumpkin

There are many ways to come up with designs for carving a pumpkin. Our family always let the children draw the design. If your children are too young to draw a design, the internet is full of pictures to choose a design. Toward the end of this article, I will list a website to find designs for carving a pumpkin. Make sure you have a pumpkin big enough for the design you have chosen to carve into the pumpkin.

Begin by cutting the top of the pumpkin open. Using a butcher knife poke a hole into the pumpkin about an inch below the stem on the pumpkin. Next, slice all the way around in a circle until the top lifts off the pumpkin. If any pumpkin guts remain on the top, clean that off.

Now for the fun part the children always loved. Using your hands dig inside the pumpkin and clean the guts out. Place pumpkin guts on newspaper or in a trash can if you have one next to where you are carving the pumpkin.

If you haven't already done so, cut the drawing out of the design you have chosen for the pumpkin. Place the cutout on pumpkin and use a marker to trace the design onto the pumpkin.

You can continue to use the knife or use a pumpkin-carving utensil found at many stores during Halloween. Begin by poking a small hole into the first part of the design you want to carve. Cut along the trace of the design until it falls out of the pumpkin. Continue to do this until the entire design is finished.

Place a small battery operated candle or a tea light candle inside the pumpkin and replace top of pumpkin. Your children will see the finished design of choice on their pumpkin.

One small note, if you use a butcher knife to carve the pumpkin, keep the knife away from children.
