If you need a Cat in the Hat costume for Halloween or for a school play, you can easily make one yourself. Making your own Cat in the Hat costume will save money over buying one ready made.

To start your Cat in the Hat costume, you will need a pair of black footed pajamas or a black sweat suit with black socks. Then you want to make a large area on the belly and down the legs either gray or white. You can do this by using paint, but that will ruin the clothing. You can also get the effect by cutting out some white or gray fabric and pinning it in place.

You will also need a black hood to wear over the head. To make a hood, you can make a simple tube using a black t-shirt or other stretch fabric. Make the tub so it fits snugly over the head. Then cut a hole for the face. Paint the face with face paint and draw on some whiskers, and cat nose and enhance the eyes with black outlines.

To make the hat, you can build a tall hat with black construction paper. Then add red stripes. If you want, you can use a black hat as a base, then make it a tall hat by just making a long tube and attaching it to the top of the hat.

The only other items you need to complete the Cat in the Hat costume are a long cat tail and a big red bow tie. For the tail, you can roll up any black t-shirt and pin it closed. Then pin the t-shirt tube to the back of the costume. For the bow tie, you can usually find one in any dollar store. Or you can just make a bow tie using red fabric or red construction paper. To attach the bow tie to the neck, just pin a cord to the bow tie then tie in the back of the neck.

If you want an elaborate Cat in the Hat costume, you can use fleece or faux fur and sew your own costume. You might not find an actual sewing pattern for Cat in the Hat, but you can use any cat costume pattern and adapt it by using black fabric and making your hat. Simplicity has a cat costume for kids.
